Inaugural Message
Kazuaki Kadonosono, MD, PhD
President,
Japanese Retina and Vitreous Society
(JRVS)
It is a great honor and privilege to serve as the 9th President of the Japanese Retina and Vitreous Society (JRVS).
Since its foundation in 1963 as the Retinal Detachment Research Group, the JRVS has played a pivotal role in advancing both basic and clinical research in retinal and vitreous diseases. Building on the distinguished achievements of our predecessors, the Society has established a strong international reputation for excellence in ophthalmic science and education in Japan. As President, I am committed to carrying forward this proud legacy while further enhancing the remarkable progress made under the leadership of my predecessor, Professor Taiji Sakamoto.
In recent years, public awareness of retinal diseases has substantially increased. Because these disorders are directly linked to visual function and quality of life, the JRVS is dedicated to elucidating disease mechanisms and developing effective treatments for a wide spectrum of retinal conditions. As society increasingly values lifelong visual health, our role as scientific and clinical leaders has become increasingly essential. In today’s digital era, where visual demands and screen exposure continue to rise, new types of retinal disorders are being identified. In this context, one of our most important missions is to translate cutting-edge research findings into clinical practice, thereby improving patient outcomes and ensuring the highest standards of eye care. To this end, we will continue to provide our members with the latest scientific information and meaningful opportunities for professional growth.
Looking ahead, the JRVS will pursue its activities guided by the following four core principles:
1. Nurturing young leaders and promoting clinical research:
Establish structured programs to foster the next generation of leaders and support high-quality, practice-oriented research.
2. Strengthening international collaboration and ensuring sustainability:
Building global partnerships and establishing a stable organizational foundation for the future.
3. Enhancing communication and information sharing:
Transparent and timely communication within the society and with the broader ophthalmic community should be promoted.
4. Empowering women in ophthalmology:
Advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that all members can contribute to the field’s progress.
To realize these goals, five specialized committees have been established, each led by a dedicated chairperson to implement concrete initiatives. Through these efforts, the JRVS aims to be an open, dynamic, and globally connected society that values diversity of ideas and fosters innovation through collaboration.
Together with all our members and international partners, we will continue to shape the future of retinal and vitreous medicine in Japan and worldwide.
I sincerely appreciate your continued support and cooperation.
