Introduction of Japanese Retina and Vitreous Society

The aim of Japanese Retina and Vitreous Society is to contribute to further academic development of Retina and Vitreous filed by promoting both clinical and basic studies, and other related subjects.

In Mourning the Loss of Our Dearest Friend, Professor Ramin Tadayoni

With heavy hearts, we, the members of the Japan Retina and Vitreous Society (JRVS), mourn the passing of Professor Ramin Tadayoni. His remarkable achievements are widely recognized throughout the world. However, he was more than just an outstanding professional; he was an exceptional human being.

Professor Tadayoni graciously accepted our invitation to deliver a special lecture at the 58th Annual Meeting of the JRVS held in Nagasaki in 2019. His speech left a profound impression on JRVS members. Moreover, he generously guided us in the establishment and operation of the International Retina Society, FujiRetina, hosted by JRVS. Without Professor Tadayoni's support, we could not have achieved such success.

Respected not only in France but also by ophthalmologists worldwide, Professor Tadayoni's warmth, tolerance, intellect, and smile charmed many people. His sudden departure is a profound loss to the field of ophthalmology, and it is difficult to imagine anyone filling his shoes.

At this time, our thoughts are with the late Professor, and we pray for his eternal peace. We sincerely hope that his family finds solace in their time of sorrow.

Announcement of Humanitarian Support
for Ophthalmic Emergencies
Due to the Military Invasion of Ukraine
April 18, 2022

The military invasion of Ukraine started in February 2022, and since then there have been numerous reports of immense civilian suffering, large numbers of indiscriminate civilian casualties and widespread destruction of civilian homes and facilities. The suffering of the Ukrainian people is difficult to comprehend, and the inhumanity of this war situation continues to this date. Personally, I find it difficult to believe that such human folly can occur in the 21st century, and I feel immense sadness but also a strong resolve to help.

On behalf of the Japanese Retina and Vitreous Society, I would like to express our solidarity with the Ukrainian people and our ophthalmology colleagues in Ukraine who are providing ophthalmic care to those who have been injured or are refugees due to the military invasion. In support of these medical emergency activities, the Japanese Retina and Vitreous Society has decided to make a monetary donation to the Ukrainian Society of Vitreo-Retinal Surgery via Professor Andrzej Grzybowski of Poland and fellow member of the Retina Society.

We sincerely hope for a quick and peaceful resolution to this conflict.

Taiji Sakamoto, MD
President, Japanese Retina and Vitreous Society
